The constant level of moisture in the fiber keeps wool from conducting static electricity, which not only causes those annoying shocks but also acts as a magnet to pull fine dirt and dust particles deep into your garment. Wool is also extremely resilient and highly extensible, which essentially means you can stretch it a third of its length, or two-thirds when wet, and it’ll recover to its original shape. Despite over a century of effort, not a single manmade fiber yet possesses all these amazing qualities.
This makes alpaca an ideal choice for people who crave colorwork but prefer to use all-natural, undyed materials. Unlike sheep’s wool, which tends to be bleached to a pure white and then dyed to suit the manufacturer, alpaca fiber does not bleach readily. This means more care must be taken in matching the natural fiber color with the finished color goals. Those large scales mean that alpaca won’t felt as readily as its fine sheep’s wool counterparts, but it does produce beautiful results, given extra time and care.
When the cashmere goat molts in the spring, it releases its fibers in large clumps. Although the clumps can be pulled off by hand, in China and Mongolia most commonly they are combed off by hand using a coarse comb. The combing process yields a high percentage of pure cashmere with less guard hair. In other countries, however, the entire fleece may be shorn. Since all the fibers are being cut at once, you’ll have a higher amount of guard hairs that will need to be removed. Guard hairs are an issue with cashmere.
