Birds are an essential component of such a lot freshwater ecosystems (lakes, rivers, wetlands) yet their position within the trophic dynamics of those water our bodies has usually been neglected. As a conspicuous a part of the biota of water our bodies, aquatic birds are symptoms in their trophic nation either by way of species composition (quality) in addition to occupancy and breeding (quantity). Birds can also impact the trophic nation of a water physique by means of uploading foodstuff (.e.g. resident or migrating birds feeding on adjoining watersheds or the sea). as a result of anthropogenic actions, predation or their mobility, birds won't make the most of another way appropriate aquatic habitat. those components complicate the connection among aquatic chicken creation and the trophic prestige of habitats. thus, the function of aquatic birds in freshwater ecosystems has often been missed.
This quantity features a wide variety of papers chosen from these provided on the symposium and reviewed.

The central basin is mesotrophic, the eastern areas are oligotrophic, whilst the western basin (and lower Detroit River) is distinctly eutrophic. Progressive eutrophication has been a major concern in recent decades, mainly due to run-off of phosphorus, nitrogen and other nutrients from surrounding agricultural land, as well as sewage discharges (Great Lakes Water Quality Board, 1981; Herdendorf, 1982). 2. The diverse aquatic conditions support a varied and commercially important fish resource, but the composition and structure of the fish community has been modified greatly by introductions of exotic species over the past century (Hartman, 1988).
